big girl bed

Lucy experienced many “firsts” during our trip to Florida – first plane ride, first dip in the ocean, first touch of sand, and…first sleep in a big girl bed! The guest bedroom where we stayed in the condo had two sets of bunk beds. Rather than squeeze a pack-n-play into the room as well, we decided to give it a go with Lucy on a bottom bunk, in a “big girl” twin bed.

She did great, as if she had always slept in a twin bed. The first night, she snuck out several times before falling asleep – she would slip out and stroll over to the doorway, where she could see the rest of us in the living room. With her trademark smirk on her face, she would point just one toe over the threshold, testing the boundaries. We sent her back to bed every time, and by night #2, she knew the rules.
Upon our return home, it was back to the crib. However, Miss Big Girl had a taste of the good life on vacation, and she wasn’t about to go back to being a “baby.” So, she did what every growing girl would do: mastered the “Climb out of the Crib” routine in record time. Last week was full of many thuds, followed by the quick pitter-patter of little feet.
Needless to say, we wasted no time in ordering her a matching twin bed with all of the trimmings. After three years of solid use, our trusty crib has retired to the basement.

I remember the day we assembled the crib like it was yesterday. I was nearly 36 weeks pregnant with Audrey. We had endured several crib misfortunes (splintered wood the first time, poor packaging damage a second time), and I was freaking out that baby #1 would arrive before his or her crib. Nick put the crib together the weekend of one of my baby showers. My mom snapped this photo on October 5, 2008 on our way out the door to the shower. Can you believe what a disarray the baby’s room was in with only four weeks to go until the birth?? Clearly, I was living on the edge.

It literally takes my breath away to see that picture and to know that was our life less than four years ago… now here we are, two twin beds later…
